Burnicombe Farm Organic Produce

Ice cream

We use our organic fruit to make delicious artisan ice cream using old fashioned recipes which contain only the best of natural ingredients. That means no artificial flavourings, colours or stabilisers. As a consequence our ice cream has a distinctly natural flavour and texture which is light on the pallet.

We sell ice cream direct to the public from our outside catering vans – Van Rouge (see link).

We also sell to select hotels and restaurants in the West Country.

Blueberries

Blueberries are known as a super fruit with outstanding health inducing properties and antioxidants which are believed to relieve the effects of cancer. With growing awareness the fruit is becoming more and more popular in the UK but only 1% of the blueberries sold are actually grown here – most being imported from as far away as New Zealand and Chile.

One of the reasons for this is because the growing conditions for blueberries are quite specific and not very common in the UK – however we discovered that the South West facing fields at Burnicombe are ideal for blueberries which enjoy well drained, acidic soil with as much sun as our climate enjoys. We grow various varieties which fruit throughout July, August and September. We sell our delicious fresh blueberries to local suppliers, green grocers and to Riverford Organics.

What we don’t sell as fresh fruit we make into ice cream and other dishes and sell direct to the consumer from our catering vans and also to hotels and restaurants in the West Country.

Beef

Bred for its flavour, tenderness and succulence our hardy Hereford herd lives outside all year round. The farm provides summer grazing on our lushious pasture and wild flower meadows and winter shelter in the gorse thickets when feed is supplemented by our own hay and silage. The meat is sold direct from the farm and is used in our catering.

Pork

Our pigs are Saddleback and Old Spot crosses – this mix gives a leaner and less fatty cut. Our pigs graze and forage in pasture and woodland all year round – their free range life ensures the best flavour is achieved not to mention happy animals.

The meat is sold direct from the farm and is used in our catering.

Goat

We make cheese, yogurt and some specialist ice cream with the milk from our small British Saanan herd. We sell the gelded males for meat which is fast making a comeback onto the menu in the UK – partly inspired by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall who sells our goat meat in his Axeminster restaurant where it is a popular alternative to lamb - less fatty and lower in colestral. We are one of the only producers of organic free range goat in the UK. Our goat meat has a distinct flavour similar to that of jacobs sheep - enhanced by slow cooking. Available in freezer packs direct from the farm or by mail order – next day delivery. Phone or e-mail for details.
